Here's our story.
My mom was sitting with family in their front yard with her feet propped up trying to stay cool on a very hot August 8th. They all had been talking about generations and how there had not been twins in the family for over 71 years. My mom was scheduled for a Dr's appointment and an x-ray the following day. She had only gained 20lbs during the pregnancy but started to swell really bad in her feet and legs.
On August 9th, 1976, my mom went in for her Dr's appointment and was told that she was developing toxemia so they were going to go ahead and deliver her "very big baby". Obviously the x-ray was never performed. The Dr's broke her water and started the induction. I was born at 5:20pm weighing 5lbs 4 1/2 oz. The Dr. turned around to wash his hands. A minute or two later, the nurse advised the Dr. to stop washing his hands because there was another baby on the way. WHAT?? Imagine the shock that my mom, Dr. and nurses went through. Wow! Not expecting THAT one!! Allison was born at 5:23pm weighing 5lbs 7 oz., was breech and black and blue. Funny that she was bigger than me since she is so petite now!
We had spent 9 months together being separated by our own gestational sacs, but that was not going to keep me from fighting my way out first. I won! ;) Poor little Allison took months of
Back then, the dad's had to stay in the waiting area until the Dr's came out. My mom wanted to be the one to tell my dad that their "Little something new had turned out to be Two"!! Soo, the nurse went to the waiting area and told my dad and aunt and uncle that were there that they needed to come with her. Of course, the three of them were scared half to death.
A chair was placed for my dad by the head of my mom's bed just in case he fainted. My mom, looking all serious, told my dad and aunt and uncle that they now had TWO new baby girls added to the family. My dad was in total shock and my aunt screamed with joy!
Three minutes after I was born, I met the most wonderful, caring, loving and beautiful sister in the world! She has been by my side ever since through tears of happiness and sadness and through tears because of silly sappy movies. She has always been there for me through thick and thin, the good and the bad and everywhere in between! I am so grateful and blessed to have her in my life and so very thankful that God chose her to be my twin sister! I wouldn't want to share this day with anyone else but her!
Through the years:
